South Korean Naval Destroyer Visits to Da Nang

On May 4, the Republic of Korea Navy’s destroyer ROKS Kang Gam Chan (DDH-979), carrying 296 officers and sailors under the command of Captain Kwon Yong Gu, docked at Tien Sa Port to begin an official visit to Da Nang, scheduled from May 4 to 6.

A welcoming ceremony was held with the presence of representatives from Vietnam’s Naval Region 3, the Da Nang People’s Committee, Military Region 5, the Da Nang City Military Command, the Da Nang Border Guard Command, the Department of Foreign Relations under the Ministry of National Defense, the Military Security Protection Department, and Coast Guard Region 2.

Representing the Republic of Korea were the Korean Defense Attaché to Vietnam and officials from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Da Nang.

During their stay until May 6, the ship’s commanding officers will pay courtesy visits to leaders of the Da Nang People’s Committee and Naval Region 3. Meanwhile, crew members will tour various cultural and tourist sites throughout the city. The visit also includes a joint naval exercise between the Vietnamese Navy and the Korean Navy.

The arrival of ROKS Kang Gam Chan underscores the commitment to enhancing friendship, cooperation, mutual understanding, and cultural exchange between Vietnam and South Korea, while further strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.

Notably, ROKS Kang Gam Chan and the logistics support ship ROKS Hwacheon (AOE-59) previously visited Da Nang in September 2017 for a goodwill mission.

ROKS Kang Gam Chan measures 150 meters in length, 17.4 meters in width, and 38.5 meters in height, with a displacement of 5,500 tons and a crew complement of 344 personnel. The destroyer is equipped with modern maritime radar systems and an advanced weapons suite, including missiles and torpedoes.
