In Da Nang’s evolving cultural landscape, where modern entertainment often dominates attention, HAT Jazz stands apart as a rare example of a family band built on discipline, artistic integrity, and a deep respect for live music. More than a jazz group, HAT Jazz is a household where music is not a hobby, nor a performance alone, but a lifelong commitment shared across generations.
HAT Jazz is a family of three: Nguyễn Anh Tú, a professional contrabass artist; Hà Anh Thu, the band’s vocalist; and their son, Nguyễn Hà Anh Dũng, a young pianist growing up immersed in jazz from an early age. Together, they form a unit artistically and personally where music is created, practiced, and lived every day.
The Father of the Band
The story of HAT Jazz begins with Nguyễn Anh Tú. A professionally trained contrabass artist with 20 years of formal study at the Hanoi Academy of Music, Tú is the artistic foundation of the band. He is also the one who made the defining decision to leave Hanoi and move to Da Nang.
The idea to relocate was entirely his. Seeking a calmer environment to build a meaningful musical life, Tú chose Da Nang not for commercial opportunity, but for balance, peace, and space both physical and emotional.
He formed HAT Jazz with a clear purpose: to create a space where his wife could sing freely, and where his son could grow up learning jazz piano seriously, under daily guidance not casually, but with professional discipline.
A Family Built on Practice, Not Image
While HAT Jazz may feel effortless to listeners, their music is grounded in rigorous daily work. The family emphasizes that jazz, for them, is not improvisation without structure it is the result of years of training and constant practice.
Every day, Nguyễn Anh Tú and Nguyễn Hà Anh Dũng practice four to five hours, refining technique, listening, and musical communication. This is not done for performance alone, but to maintain artistic integrity and growth.
“We are a family, but each of us has a different role. The father and son practice seriously every day. Jazz is hard work it is not only for fun.”
This distinction is essential to understanding HAT Jazz: they are not casual performers, but trained musicians who choose simplicity in lifestyle, not simplicity in art.
Why Da Nang Became Home
Moving from Hanoi to Da Nang was not an escape it was a conscious choice. Da Nang offered what the family needed most: calm, rhythm, and a sustainable pace of life.
They built their home with the spirit of old Hanoi warm, welcoming, and intimate. Tea is always served first. Guests are treated like friends. Conversations matter as much as music.
Their home sits between urban life and quiet space symbolic of the band itself, positioned between tradition and modern expression.
The Home Jazz Night: Music as Community
Once a month, HAT Jazz opens their home for a private Home Jazz Night, limited to around 20 guests. These evenings are not marketed performances, but shared experiences.
There are no staff, no separation between musicians and audience, and no commercial structure. Food and drinks are prepared by the family. Guests serve themselves. Chairs are rearranged together. Music unfolds naturally.
“People come as guests, not customers,”
HAT Jazz explains. “They listen, talk, and leave as friends.”
Many visitors attend for the first time and return regularly. Some plan their travels to Da Nang around these nights. The intimacy cannot be scaled and the family intentionally keeps it that way.
Live Music Above All
In an age of streaming and digital presence, HAT Jazz remains firmly committed to live performance. They believe the emotional exchange between musicians and listeners cannot be replaced.
“Live music has a soul. When people hear us live, they feel it immediately even during soundcheck.”
This philosophy has earned them genuine listeners rather than large online numbers. Their audience includes locals, expatriates, and international travelers who value authenticity over trend.
A Quiet Cultural Anchor in Da Nang
As Da Nang continues to grow, HAT Jazz represents a quieter, deeper layer of the city’s cultural identity. Their story is not about one individual, but about a family choosing discipline, unity, and sincerity.
They are not performing a brand.
They are living a life.
In a modest home filled with music, practice, and shared meals, HAT Jazz reminds us that the most meaningful art often comes from unity and from choosing to live truthfully, together.
