Hai Van Quan to Welcome Tourists with Free Admission Starting in August

Hai Van Gate — A Monument of Heritage and Scenic Grandeur

Hai Van Gate, located atop the iconic Hai Van Pass, stands as a national relic rich in history and strategic significance. The site underwent a major restoration beginning in late 2021, funded equally by Thua Thien Hue and Da Nang, with a total investment of VND 42 billion.

Originally constructed during the Tran Dynasty and renovated in 1826 under Emperor Minh Mang of the Nguyen Dynasty, the structure features two engraved gates:

  • Hai Van Quan” facing Thua Thien Hue
  • Thien Ha De Nhat Hung Quan” (“The World’s Most Majestic Gate”) facing Quang Nam

Historically, Hai Van Gate served as a military fortification guarding the southern approach to the imperial capital of Hue. Its architectural system includes fort walls, storage buildings, command post, and ancient cannon fortifications.

In 2017, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism officially recognized Hai Van Gate as a National Historical and Architectural Relic, reinforcing its dual significance as a heritage landmark and tourism icon shared between Hue and Da Nang.

A Cultural Symbol Connecting Two Cities

With its sweeping mountain-to-ocean vistas, deep historical roots, and newly revitalized structure, Hai Van Gate is expected to further elevate tourism for both Hue and Da Nang. The proposed fee policy, once finalized, aims to sustainably protect the monument while enhancing the experience for future generations of visitors.
