The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has recently made a significant decision to include the traditional knowledge associated with Quang noodles (Mì Quảng) in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage list. This decision underscores the value of preserving and promoting this unique culinary tradition.
In accordance with the decision, local People’s Committees in regions where this intangible cultural heritage is recognized are required to manage and oversee the preservation of this heritage in line with relevant cultural heritage laws.
Mr. Nguyễn Thanh Hồng, Director of the Quang Nam Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, elaborated on the significance of this inclusion. He explained that the traditional knowledge of Quang noodles encompasses the entire process from ingredient cultivation, through raw product production, to the application of folk knowledge that results in the creation of Quang noodles—a distinctive dish of Quang Nam.
Mr. Hồng noted, “The entire process – from rice cultivation and noodle production to the use of water sources, selection of fillings, and spices – reflects a rich tradition of knowledge and local cultural elements. This fusion is what produces the authentic Quang noodles that are emblematic of Quang Nam.“
The recognition of this traditional knowledge extends beyond the dish itself to encompass broader cultural and culinary values. According to Mr. Hồng, this inclusion not only affirms the cultural significance of Quang noodle production but also supports ongoing efforts to preserve and promote this vital aspect of Quang Nam’s culinary heritage.
Furthermore, this recognition contributes to celebrating Quang Nam’s distinctive culinary offerings, attracting tourists, fostering tourism development, creating employment opportunities, advancing local crafts, and boosting the regional economy.
The Essence of Quang Noodles
The Quang Nam Provincial People’s Committee formally requested the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to recognize Quang noodle processing as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Quang Nam asserts that from the late 15th century through the Nguyen Lords era, the fertile and resource-rich southern region, then sparsely populated, became a “promised land” for settlers from Thanh-Nghệ-Tĩnh and the northern plains seeking new opportunities.
Through persistent labor and adaptation to their new environment, these early settlers gradually shaped the distinct identity and cultural essence of Quang Nam.
One of the most vivid manifestations of this identity is its culinary tradition, with Quang noodles serving as a prominent example. The practice of Quang noodle preparation in the province reflects the unique culinary values of the region.
Quang noodles have journeyed alongside settlers moving south, integrating diverse ingredients encountered along the way, resulting in a rich and varied culinary experience.
This dish, known for its many variations, epitomizes the unique characteristics of local folk cuisine and is one of the few dishes capable of satisfying a wide range of tastes. It is a simple yet profound representation of both the historical evolution and traditional knowledge of Quang Nam.
Currently, Quang noodles are found in most provinces across Vietnam and in several countries, including the United States, Japan, and Australia. This widespread presence underscores the enduring appeal and vitality of Quang noodles within the vibrant tapestry of Vietnamese culinary culture.
