Thirty years later, it became a concession under French rule and was officially named Tourane.During the colonial period, Tourane emerged as a significant port city. With its strategic location and abundant coal resources, it became a key trading hub between Annam and other provinces. Its geographical advantages positioned it as a central player in the economic landscape of French Indochina.Situated near Hue, the former imperial capital until the reign of Emperor Bảo Đại, Tourane lies at the estuary of the Han River, nestled at the base of Sơn Trà Mountain. The city’s name is derived from the Han River, historically referred to as Cửa Hàn, meaning “Mouth of the Han River.”For enthusiasts of colonial architecture, remnants of the era still stand today, with several well-preserved administrative buildings serving as a testament to the city’s past.By 1920, Tourane had a population of approximately 15,000. In contrast, by 2001, Da Nang’s population had grown to 728,000, spanning an area of 1,250 square kilometers.During the French colonial period, Tourane ranked among the largest cities in French Indochina, alongside Hanoi, Saigon-Cholon, and Haiphong. Today, it has transformed into one of Vietnam’s most prominent tourist destinations, famed for its stunning beaches, particularly My Khe Beach, which is often regarded as one of the most beautiful in the country. The city’s rapid development has led to a flourishing hospitality industry, with a wide range of accommodations, including internationally renowned hotels and resorts.In 1950, the city officially adopted the name Da Nang. Until 1997, it remained part of Quang Nam-Da Nang Province. However, on January 1, 1997, Da Nang was administratively separated from Quang Nam to become Vietnam’s fourth centrally governed municipality, joining Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Haiphong. This transition marked a pivotal moment in the city’s history, enabling it to emerge as a dynamic economic and tourism hub in Vietnam.
