Step into the captivating world of Teh Dar, an extraordinary art show that brings the rich cultural tapestry of Tây Nguyên to life on stage. This groundbreaking performance, a tribute to Vietnam’s highland tribes, offers a mesmerizing blend of tribal traditions, contemporary artistry, and evocative storytelling.
The Concept: Preserving Tribal Heritage
The idea behind ‘Teh Dar’ goes back to the early days of this land, where Viet people were collective ethnic tribes living on different parts of the peninsula. Tribal men and women came around the fire, hunted, danced, and harvested together, in circles, within which, cultural stories that inspired ‘Teh Dar’ began. Today, 54 of those tribes still remain, scattered all over the highlands of Vietnam. Tây Nguyên is one of those significant highland, centrally located in the South West and rich in culture.
In K’Ho – a tongue spoken by one of the Tây Nguyênese – the word ‘Teh Dar’ means ‘going in circle’. Here lies the philosophy, the belief that keep Teh Dar artists going: maintaining the symbolic circles of tribal cultures, giving them new life on stage, preserving beautiful aspects of tribal traditions from fading under the overwhelming tide of modernization. As the people keep going, the circles remain, and so will their cultures
Tây Nguyên Tribes on Stage: A Sensory Journey
The creators and artists of Teh Dar immersed themselves in the life of Tây Nguyên, absorbing its essence to craft a visually stunning performance. Using minimal props such as masks and bamboo, they created bold stage visuals that reflect the highland’s spirit. Tribal dances are transformed into breathtaking acrobatic feats, while the stage floor is dyed with red highland soil, adding an authentic touch.
Teh Dar is a groundbreaking performance that pays homage to Tây Nguyên’s tribes and proudly showcases their beauty to the world. It is the first of its kind to bring the highland’s vibrant culture to a contemporary stage, blending traditional elements with modern theatricality.
Tales of the Wild Highland: A Journey Through Myth and Legend
Teh Dar invites audiences to explore a realm of mythical mountains and jungles, where ancient life is both wild and beautiful. The performance features minimalistic set designs, complemented by evocative lighting and music that create an almost magical atmosphere.
Experience the thrill of wild animal hunts, the valor of prehistoric highland conquerors, and the romance of moonlit love by the streams. Revel in the exuberance of tribal youth and community games, and listen to ancient lullabies resonating through the jungle. The performance also delves into themes of death and reincarnation, whispered by the creatures of the wild night.
Enchanting Music: The Soul of Tây Nguyên
Central to Teh Dar is its enchanting music, performed live on traditional Tây Nguyên instruments. The show features a rich array of authentic tribal instruments, including the Goong, Ki Páh, elephant drum, buffalo horn, and T’rưng. Many of these instruments are considered sacred and require blessings for performance.
The music, masterfully orchestrated and led by powerful percussion, creates a unique ‘tribal orchestra’ that transports the audience to an ancient highland space and time. This musical ambiance, recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, combines with hypnotic vocals to offer an immersive auditory experience.
