The Da Nang People’s Committee has provided an update on the progress of several pivotal infrastructure projects as outlined in Resolution No. 25 of the city’s People’s Council. These initiatives encompass the relocation of the railway station, plans for an underground tunnel beneath the Han River, and a tunnel through Da Nang Airport.
Han River Tunnel Project
Investment preparation for the Han River tunnel, part of the 2021-2030 strategic plan with a vision extending to 2050, has received approval from the Prime Minister via Decision 1287. Construction is slated for the 2031-2045 period. This ambitious project will establish a connection from Dong Da – Tran Phu street (Hai Chau district) to Van Don – Tran Hung Dao street (Son Tra district), with an estimated construction cost of 4,700 billion VND.
Collaboration with the World Bank
Between 2021 and 2030, Da Nang is collaborating with the World Bank to expedite several key infrastructure projects. These include the airport tunnel, an East-West connecting route through Da Nang Airport, and the relocation of the railway station. The city is also focusing on developing smart urban transportation systems such as metros, tramways, and monorails. The centerpiece of these initiatives is the Han River tunnel, a 40-meter-wide passage connecting Dong Da – Tran Phu with Van Don – Tran Hung Dao.
Tunnel Design and Logistics
The tunnel will commence at the intersection of Dong Da and Tran Phu Streets on the Han River’s west bank, following a Z-shaped route to connect with Van Don Street in Son Tra District. City leaders have carefully considered the project’s impact, including maintaining the river’s 2.5 km width. The tunnel’s construction will require the relocation and compensation of approximately 210 households, with a projected annual operating cost of 26.4 billion VND.
Designed for a speed of 60 km/h, the tunnel will feature six lanes—three in each direction—ensuring smooth traffic flow. Future plans include provisions for a rapid bus transit (BRT) system. Additionally, a 2-meter-wide emergency escape lane will be incorporated, housing technical infrastructure to enhance safety and aesthetics.
Next Steps
The Da Nang People’s Committee has outlined the subsequent steps in the project’s timeline. Within three months of securing investment preparation funds, the selection of consultants for the pre-feasibility study report will be completed, targeting September 2024. The pre-feasibility study is expected to be finalized and submitted for appraisal in December, with the comprehensive feasibility study slated for completion by August 2025.
Da Nang’s strategic infrastructure projects are set to significantly enhance the city’s connectivity and urban development, positioning it as a model of modern urban planning and international collaboration.
