The craft of making rice paper in Tuy Loan village has a long-established history, closely tied to the cultural and heritage values of the ancient village of Tuy Loan, home to the Tuy Loan communal house, which boasts over 500 years of history.
Currently, in Hòa Phong commune, Hòa Vang district, there are 15 households that regularly maintain the traditional craft of making rice paper, primarily located in Tuy Loan village. Each year during the Lunar New Year, over 40 households across the commune participate in the rice paper production to meet the market demand.
Since 2014, the People’s Committee of Hòa Vang district has directed the People’s Committee of Hòa Phong commune to implement the “Project for the Development of the Tuy Loan Rice Paper Craft Village, Hòa Phong Commune, Hòa Vang District, Da Nang City.” This project places emphasis on the development of production, the preservation, and promotion of the Tuy Loan rice paper brand, while supporting the growth of the traditional craft village.
On February 21, 2024, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism issued Decision No. 374/QĐ-BVHTTDL, officially recognizing the Tuy Loan rice paper craft as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. This is a great honor for Tuy Loan village and the residents of Hòa Phong commune, adding further recognition to a centuries-old craft village in Da Nang. It also serves as a crucial condition for the local community to continue preserving, maintaining, and further enhancing the value of this craft.
The recognition of Tuy Loan rice paper making as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage marks the culmination of generations of efforts to preserve and develop this craft. This acknowledgment will motivate the local community to continue safeguarding and promoting their cultural heritage while generating income. Additionally, it offers potential for experiential tourism and craft village tourism, linking the product to broader tourism experiences.
